Study Abroad: Transferring Your Credits

How to transfer your academic credit back to a university in the Netherlands

As a Dutch student, we understand that you might be concerned about your academic credits transferring back to your home university after studying abroad. Don't worry! We're here to help.

This guide will explain how to transfer any US academic credit you earn while studying abroad with us.

How to Transfer Your Credits

Bringing your US academic credits back to a university in the Netherlands is usually a smooth process.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Chat with Your Study Advisor

Before you study abroad, talk to your study advisor at your Dutch university. They'll explain the university's credit transfer policies and help you select courses that have a good chance of transferring.

2. Understand the ECTS

Many universities in Europe, including those in the Netherlands, use the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Familiarise yourself with ECTS and how it compares to the US credit system.

3. Consider the Bologna Process

The Bologna Process aims to standardise higher education across Europe. It can influence how credits transfer between countries, so it's worth understanding how this process works too.

4. Get your US transcripts

When you finish your summer or semester abroad, we'll send you your official US transcripts. These show all your courses, grades, and earned credits.

5. Submit your transcripts to your Dutch university

Send those transcripts to the admissions or registrar's office at your university. They'll review your coursework and decide which credits will transfer.

Tips for a smooth transfer

  • Pre-approval: It's a good idea to get your courses pre-approved by your Dutch university before you start your Study Abroad programme. This can help ensure a smooth transfer process.
  • Course Alignment: Choose courses that align with your degree programme and have learning outcomes similar to those offered at your university.
  • Keep Records: Keep copies of course syllabi, assignments, and grades to support your credit transfer application.

By following these guidelines and working with your study advisor, you can easily transfer your US credits and continue your studies in the Netherlands without any problems.
